In 1921, the light in a stairwell in Stuttgart switched off automatically for the very first time. The reason: an innovative time switch developed by Paul Schwenk. What started as a simple mechanical device marked the beginning of building automation – and the founding of Theben.
From Humble Beginnings to Global Player
Founder Paul Schwenk, born in 1889, began his career as a precision mechanic and developed his first stairwell timer in 1918 as a graduation project. In 1921, he founded his own company, which quickly gained recognition for its innovative, durable, and high-quality products.
Innovation Through the Decades
- 1934: Launch of the ELPA stairwell timer – a milestone in automation.
- 1960s: Significant growth driven by smart advertising, environmental awareness, and employee well-being.
- 1976: The theben-timer takes Europe by storm – now with over 33 million units sold.
- 1995: Theben contributes to the development of KNX, now the global standard for building automation.
- 2018: Introduction of LUXORliving, Theben's smart home system.
